Accepting the unknown: uncertainty-related processes as mediators for the effect of mindfulness on anxiety

Current theoretical frameworks of anxiety suggest that excessive responding to uncertainty plays a central role in anxiety disorders. In this talk, I will present my PhD project, in which I investigate how mindfulness may modulate such responses to uncertainty and thereby help decrease symptoms of anxiety. Results of the first three studies will be presented: a pilot study that compared the efficacy of two mindfulness interventions for reducing symptoms, one consisting of conventional mindfulness practice and one with an added element of anxiety-specific practice; followed by two studies aimed at investigating emotional response and inflated estimates of threat probability in response to uncertainty as potential mediators for the effect of a mindfulness intervention on anxiety symptoms.
